books

warriors (series), erin hunter

“for generations, four clans of wild cats have shared the forest according to the laws laid down by their warrior ancestors. but the thunderclan cats are in grave danger, and the sinister shadowclan grows stronger every day. noble warriors are dying – and some deaths are more mysterious than others. in the midst of this turmoil appears an ordinary house cat named Rusty… who may turn out to be the bravest warrior of them all” (via goodreads)

GOOD GOD. i have 73 of these fuckers. there’s just so many i think i’m addicted to them. warrior cats (as it is colloquially known) is one of my longest-lasting interests… it just never gets old to me. i know so much about the first series because i’ve read it probably like 30 times. honestly this series is like a drug to me i need to smoke it so bad. anyways there are just so many good characters in this series but it’s also actually not really that well written. the erin hunter team are not very good at keeping track of details and timelines and family trees (wreaths, really, because they’re all inbred to some extent)… but it’s a series for kids so who really cares. anyways yeah these characters are my little guys firestar is my best friend my brother an older classmate who i look up to and also he is a stranger to me and someone i admire from afar. but also we are best friends. and bluestar is my father figure. whatever
maurice, e. m. forster

“maurice is heartbroken over unrequited love, which opened his heart and mind to his own sexual identity. in order to be true to himself, he goes against the grain of society’s often unspoken rules of class, wealth, and politics.” (via goodreads)

another one of my favourite books ever. written in 1914, published posthumously in 1971 because forster knew publishing a homosexual love story would ruin his career… i especially like the penguin classics edition of this book because the introduction is very insightful and i enjoyed the criticisms at the end. i have two copies of this book, one that i annotated in early 2021 and one i’m planning on annotating this fall. it’s beautiful, moving, sincere… there’s a quote forster included in the terminal note that makes my heart feel really happy but i won’t share because it has spoilers… page 220, first two sentences of the first full paragraph in the penguin classics edition. “in maurice i tried to create a character who was completely unlike myself or what i supposed myself to be […] into this mixture i dropped an ingredient that puzzles him, wakes him up, torments him and finally saves him.” (page 220, second paragraph). this book is the best thing that ever happened to me. well, not really, but it makes me experience emotions and also feelings. i could write so much about this book...
the agony of bun o'keefe, heather smith

“1986 newfoundland. bun o’keefe, 14, has an eccentric point of view to tell us her unusual story. her ma told her to go, so she did.. in the nearest city, the girl is taken in by a street musician. their shared house has an eclectic cast: a pot-smoking dishwasher with culinary dreams; a drag queen with a tragic past; a catholic school girl desperately trying to reinvent herself; and the landlord to be avoided at all cost.” (via goodreads)

one of my favourite books of all time. i read this for the first time in middle school, and then proceeded to read it 3 more times immediately after. it’s so good. dark at times, uplifting at others, and bun’s point of view is so interesting that it made it hard to put this book down. i would recommend this book 100%.
animanga
neon genesis evangelion, hideaki anno (anime)

“fifteen years after a cataclysmic event known as the second impact, the world faces a new threat: monstrous celestial beings called ‘angels’ invade Tokyo-3 one by one. mankind is unable to mankind is unable to defend themselves against the angels despite utilizing their most advanced munitions and military tactics. the only hope for human salvation rests in the hands of NERV, a mysterious organization led by the cold gendou ikari. NERV operates giant humanoid robots dubbed ‘evangelions’ to combat the angels with state-of-the-art advanced weaponry in protective barriers known as absolute terror fields. years after being abandoned by his father, shinji ikari, gendou’s 14-year-old son, returns to Tokyo-3. shinji undergoes a perpetual internal battle against the deeply buried trauma caused by the loss of his mother and the emotional neglect he suffered at the hands of his father. terrified to open himself up to another, shinji’s life is forever changed upon meeting 29-year-old misato katsuragi, a high-ranking NERV officer who shows him a free-spirited maternal kindness he has never experienced. a devastating angel attack forces shinji into action as gendou reveals his true motive for inviting his some back to Tokyo-3: shinji is the only child capable of efficiently piloting evangelion unit-01, a new robot that synchronizes with his biometrics. despite the brutal psychological trauma brought about by piloting an evangelion, shinji defends tpkyo-3 against the angelic threat, oblivious to his father’s dark machinations.” (via goodreads)

its just its just its just its sooo. i literally need to rewatch this anime 50,000 times again to fully comprehend what is going on. there’s so many themes and symbols and imagery and etc. i do think that the show focuses perhaps too much on shinji and somewhat neglects other characters but it’s whatever. i cant even think of any thoughts to add ummm… rei is my fave character… i like the weird unreality psychological existentialism buts even though they made my brain feel weird… idk. just watch it. it’s just really interesting.
erased, kei sanbe (anime & manga):

“when tragedy is about to strike, satoru fujinuma finds himself sent back several minutes before the accident occurs. the detached, 29-year-old manga artist has taken advantage of this powerful yet mysterious phenomenon, which he calls ‘revival’, to save many lives. however, when he is wrongfully accused of murdering someone close to him, satoru is sent back to the past once again, but this time to 1988, 18 years in the past. soon, he realizes that the murder may be connected to the abduction and killing of one of his classmate, the solitary and mysterious kayo hinazuki, that took place when he was a child. this is his chance to make things right. boku dake ga inai machi (erased) follows satoru in his mission to uncover what truly transpired 18 years ago and prevent the death of his classmate while protecting those he cares about in the present.” (via myanimelist)

such an amazing series. i love the art style, i love the characters, i love the plot. i did a reread of the manga a few months ago because it had ben a few years and i had completely forgotten everything but the most basic premise, and it’s just so shocking. it’s so good. i love it. time travel is already a concept i love, and this story uses it so amazingly well. there’s such suspenseful atmosphere. go watch it.
characters
bluestar, warriors:

bluestar is the leader of thunderclan when we are introduced to the clans in the first book, entitled into the wild. after graypaw encounters the then-rusty in the woods, she shows the young housecat kindness in inviting him to join their clan, seeing a potential in him. she takes rusty, now called firepaw, as her own apprentice, and trains him to be a warrior. bluestar leads the clan nobly through battles and fires, and is a fair and honourable leader. her deputy, tigerclaw, brings a group of rogues from the twolegplace into the clan’s camp and uses the raid as a distraction while he attempts to kill bluestar in her den. firepaw, now fireheart, defends his leader and tigerclaw is exiled. bluestar makes fireheart the deputy.

the betrayal cut deep, and bluestar struggles with a loss of faith in both her warrior ancestors in starclan, and with her living clanmates, believing them all to be traitors as well. eventually, tigerclaw, now tigerstar, leader of shadowclan (through deceitful means, of course), lures a group of dogs to thunderclan’s territory; they stay there for a long while, sowing fear in thunderclan and even killing an apprentice and maiming another, tigerstar leaves a trail of rabbits from their den to the entrance to the thunderclan camp, with the thunderclan queen brindleface’s corpse at the end, to give the dogs a taste for cat blood. the plan is discovered, and fireheart makes a plan to lure the dogs away from the camp and into the gorge, hoping for them to fall into the water and drown. the plan works at first, with cats running for a short while before climbing a tree with another cat ready to take their place in the race, but when it’s fireheart’s turn the lead dog catches him.

the rest of the clan is at sunningrocks, and as bluestar watches them there, helping each other, she knew her clan was loyal and that her ancestors had not abandoned her. she races up to help her clanmates in the forest, and saves firestar from the dog: she goes over the edge of the gorge with it. fireheart jumps in after her, and is able to drag her to the shore in riverclan’s territory with the help of riverclan warriors mistyfoot and stonefur. dying, bluestar confesses to them that mistyfoot and stonefur are her kits, born from an inter-clan relationship with the former riverclan deputy oakheart, and whom she gave up to protect her clan from being ruled by the bloodthirsty thistleclaw. they forgive her, and she tells fireheart she believes in him. fireheart goes to the moonstone to receive his nine lives from starclan, where bluestar gives him a life for nobility and certainty and faith; after, he is named firestar, and becomes the leader of thunderclan.

i like bluestar’s character because i like how she developed over the first series, i thought her loss of faith was incredibly interesting to follow, especially with regards to how it influenced her behaviour towards her clanmates; i can also relate to feeling like some higher power (whatever it maybe) had abandoned me. bluestar’s prophecy is also probably my favourite super edition, because i liked reading about her backstory and it also explains more about why she didn’t want thistleclaw to become the leader, so much so that she gave up her kits.
firestar, warriors

if you thought my summary of bluestar through the first series was long… just kidding this is actually shorter. well firestar appears in 4 full series. there’s just so much to say, perhaps too much. i’ll stick to the basics, i guess. starting out as rusty, he is invited by bluestar to join thunderclan. he trains as firepaw and becomes the warrior fireheart. he saves bluestar from tigerstar’s attack and becomes deputy, and after bluestar’s death he becomes firestar, leader of thunderclan. he arranges an alliance with windclan against bloodclan and tigerclan’s threat, and kills scourge. after this, he and his mate sandstorm go on a quest from starclan to rebuild the lost skyclan.

they come back, and later all four clans must move to new territory because of the threat from the twolegs’ destroying the forest to build new houses. they make their way through the mountains, led by five cats who earlier went on a quest from skyclan to find midnight and discover this new territory. they settle around the lake, and seasons later the dark forest, the antithesis to starclan, is able to materialize in the real world and launches an attack against all four clans, aided somewhat by living cats who have been training in the dark forest in their dreams. the clans fight valiantly, and win the battle.

firestar slays his enemy tigerstar once more, and is killed as the battle ends. his memory carries on through the rest of the series’, hailed as a hero.

i like firestar because i think he’s a really good guy, i enjoy his longstanding rivalry with tigerstar, and i think he’s very kindhearted and inspirational. as a kid i looked up to him a lot and i wanted to be like him – perhaps not through leading people, but through helping people, being kind and understanding and being a strong figure.

i was already crying when he died in the last hope (i was really emotionally attached to spottedleaf back then, sue me) but honestly when he died the shock from spottedleaf dying forever and then him dying immediately after made me cry so hard i seriously almost threw up like it was so fucked up but i think it’s how he would have wanted to go. protecting his clan. like i said, he’s a good guy, incredibly loyal, fair, honourable. sometimes frustratingly fair tbh… i really hope we get some starclan firestar (and bluestar, yellowfang, etc) content in a starless clan… it’s been too long since i’ve seen my bestie.
